One of the outcomes of a study we conducted in 2019 – before COVID-19 – was that FMCG companies were generally not looking for a complete re-design of their audit program. They were looking at improvement opportunities to increase its robustness, optimise the available resources, and leverage synergies. Then a “black swan” event happened. It was a surprise with a major effect. Companies were not prepared for it nor were their audit organisations. COVID-19 has been and is currently driving and accelerating a drastic transformation of the audit function. Audit organizations will have learned from this major crisis and will most probably keep new ways of working on board in the future. The future will most likely be a mix of old and new ways of doing.
